Favignana: how to get there, beaches and what to see
Favignana is the largest island of the Egadi archipelago, off the west coast of Sicily. Clear sea, golden tuff stone, bikes everywhere: here are answers to the questions we are asked most often.
How do I get to Favignana?
Favignana is the largest of the Egadi Islands, in the province of Trapani. You get there by ferry or hydrofoil from the port of Trapani (check the operators' timetables, which change with the season). The nearest airport is Trapani-Birgi; from Palermo you can reach Trapani by car or bus.
Do I need a car on the island?
No. The island is small and flat: from our houses you can walk to the centre and the port, and with a rented bike or scooter you reach every beach in under 20 minutes.
Which are the best beaches?
Our favourites: Cala Rotonda to the west, Cala Azzurra to the south-east, Cala Rossa to the north-east and the Plaia to the north. With the north-west wind (maestrale) choose the south coast, sheltered from the wind; with the scirocco, the Plaia.
What is there to see besides the sea?
The former Florio plant and its Tonnara, a reminder of the old tuna fishing; Monte Santa Caterina with its fort and views over the whole archipelago; the tuff quarries, now gardens and walks; the town centre with its square and fish restaurants.
When is the best time to come?
Our houses are open from 1 May to 30 October. June and September combine warm sea and fewer crowds; July and August are the liveliest months.
Our houses are at the start of via Calamoni, a 5-minute walk from the centre.
